“Who Stole the Cookie From The Cookie Jar?”

In English immersion we´ve been reading stories about cookies and playing the game, “Who Stole the Cookie From The Cookie Jar?”
In this game the children sit in a circle and close their eyes.  Then the teacher hides the  “cookie” under one student and everyone opens their eyes.  Then we play the game until we discover who “stole” the “cookie!”



Em imersão estamos lendo histórias sobre os “cookies” e brincado do jogo, "Quém roubou o biscoito do pote?"
Neste jogo as crianças sentam na rodinha e fecham os olhos. Em seguida, a professora esconde o "cookie" em baixo de um aluno e todos abrem os olhos. Aí  jogamos até descobrimos quém "roubou" o "cookie!"

Bath Time

This week in Ladybug English Immersion we are talking about ways to help and care for each other.  After we read the book, “Baby Bath Time,” we talked about how to care for younger children and then we played a game in which the older students pretended to give a bath to the younger students.  We used a sponge and soap and sang “The Bath Song,” which talks about washing different parts of the body.  The kids enjoyed helping each other take a bath so much we had to repeat if many times so that the younger children also had a chance to help their friends!

Esta semana, em imersão estamos falando de formas de ajudar e cuidar uns dos outros. Depois de ler o livro, "A Hora do Banho do Bebê", falamos sobre como cuidar de crianças mais novas e, em seguida, realizamos uma brincadeira em que os alunos mais velhos brincaram de dar um banho nos alunos mais novos. Usamos uma esponja e sabonete e cantamos "A Música do Banho", que fala sobre como lavar as partes do corpo. As crianças gostaram tanto de dar banho nos amigos que tivemos que repetir muitas vezes para que os menores também tiveram a oportunidade de ajudar os seus amigos!

Jack and The Beanstalk

We had a fantastic week with our new project: The Four Elements: Earth.  First we read the classic tale of Jack and The Beanstalk.  We talked about what plants need to grow: sun, water, soil.  As a fun art project, the students colored and pasted Jack going up the Beanstalk.  Later, we watched a short film of the story and reenacted the plot using colorful characters and scenes.  Finally we planted black beans in clear cups using cotton so that we can observe their growth as we continue to care for them over the coming weeks.  Once the roots have grown, we will transfer them to new containers with soil and eventually each child will take theirs home. We also had the opportunity to observe a young beanstalk that a student brought in from home.  We focused on new vocabulary: Tall, short, beanstalk, boy, mother, cow, magic beans, up, down, poor, castle, gold, axe, grow, clouds, goose, harp, egg, dirt.

I´m always surprised by our kindergarten class´s fascination with reading.  Up until this point I had not brought in any reading activities as not to confuse their intensive discovery and learning of the written word in Portuguese; however, throughout the first semester they constantly attempted to read words from books I read to them.  Yesterday I brought in the poem: The Giant´s Chant and corresponding matching word phrases.  I was amazed to see how easily they matched the phrases to the original text. Many students were actually able to follow along with their finger as we read the poem together.  

João e o Pé de Feijão  

Tivemos uma otima semana com nosso novo projeto: Os Quatro Elementos: Terra. Primeiro lemos a história clássica de João e o Pé de Feijão. Conversamos sobre o que as plantas precisam para crescer: sol, água, terra. Os alunos curtiram uma atividade de colorir e colar João subindo o pé de feijão. Depois, assistimos um vídeo e e depois recantamos a história usando figuras coloridas das personagens e cenas. Finalmente plantamos feijão preto em copos transparentes, utilizando algodão de modo que podemos observar o seu crescimento, enquanto continuamos a cuidar deles durante as próximas semanas. Uma vez que as raízes cresceram, vamos transferi-los para novos recipientes com terra e, eventualmente, cada criança levará para casa. Também tivemos a oportunidade de observar um pé de feijão maior que uma aluna trouxe de casa. Focamos no vocabulário: alto, baixo, pé de feijão, menino, mãe, vaca, feijões mágicos, pobre, castelo, ouro, machado, crescer, nuvens, ganso, harpa, ovo, terra

Estou sempre surpresa com o fascínio da nossa turma de Pré II com a leitura. Até este momento não tinha trazido atividades de leitura em inglês, para não confundir seu processo intensivo de descobertas em letramento em Português, no entanto, os alunos estão constantemente tentando “ler” palavras de textos de livros que conto para eles. Óntem trouxe o poema: The Giant´s Chant e as frases correspondentes. Fiquei chocada ao ver a facilidade com que conseguiram corresponder as frases com o texto original e muitos deles também conseguiram acompanhar com o dedo em quanto lemos o texto juntos.

We´re All in This Together!

Our English Immersion Class has been working on the project, “Building Good Manners and Good Habits.” We´ve started the second semester talking about teamwork and thinking of ways to help each other. We´ve been reading books about including different friends into our group and helping younger friends. Ladybug English Immersion has children from ages 1 to 6 years and at times it can be a challenge doing group activities because of this vast age difference. In circle time we decided to paint a rainbow together. We practiced team work and patience, plus had lots of fun, as the older children helped the younger ones. Check out the pictures!

Estamos Todos Nessa Juntos!

 Em Imersão de Inglês estamos trabalhando o projeto "Construindo Boas Maneiras e Bons Hábitos." Começamos o segundo semestre falando de trabalho em equipe e pensando em maneiras de ajudar uns aos outros. Temos lido histórias de inclusão de amigos em nosso grupo e como ajudar amigos mais novos. A turma de integral tem crianças de 1 a 6 anos e às vezes pode ser um desafio fazer atividades em grupo por causa desta diferença grande de idade. Na hora da rodinha, decidimos pintar um arco-íris juntos. Nós praticamos trabalho em equipe e paciência, além de nos divertir muito, enquanto as crianças maiores ajudaram os mais novos. Os Quatro Elementos: Fogo

For the last few months we have been talking about the element of fire.  We learned how fire is used to cook in the story,” The Little Red Hen,” memorized the poem,”Jack Be Nimble” and then took turns jumping over the candlestick, talked about how the sun is made of fire and warms up our planet, did experiments to see how fire needs oxygen to survive, and finished up by talking about fire safety.  This last week we took a look at fire fighters and their role in helping us stay safe.  We read the book, “Fire Trucks” which showed a day in the life of fire fighters depicted in vivid colorful pictures.  At the end of this project we used colored chalk to draw flames on the cement. Then drove our “fire trucks” as quickly as possible to put the fire out with bottles of water which we used as hoses just like the fire fighters did in the story!

Nos últimos meses falamos sobre o elemento fogo. Agente aprendeu como o fogo é usado para cozinhar na história, "The Little Red Hen", memorizou o poema, "Jack Be Nimble" e depois soltou sobre o candeeiro, falou sobre como o sol é feito de fogo e aquece nosso planeta, fez experiências para ver como o fogo precisa de oxigênio para sobreviver, e terminou o projeto falando sobre segurança contra incêndios. Esta última semana falamos de bombeiros e seu papel em nos ajudar a ficar seguros. Lemos o livro "Fire Trucks" que mostrou um dia na vida dos bombeiros descrito com imagens coloridas. No final deste projeto usamos giz colorido para desenhar chamas no cimento.  Em seguida, o mais rapidamente possível, dirigimos nossos "caminhões de bombeiros" para apagar o fogo usando garrafas de água como mangueiras que nem os bombeiros fizeram no história!
