Jack and The Beanstalk

We had a fantastic week with our new project: The Four Elements: Earth.  First we read the classic tale of Jack and The Beanstalk.  We talked about what plants need to grow: sun, water, soil.  As a fun art project, the students colored and pasted Jack going up the Beanstalk.  Later, we watched a short film of the story and reenacted the plot using colorful characters and scenes.  Finally we planted black beans in clear cups using cotton so that we can observe their growth as we continue to care for them over the coming weeks.  Once the roots have grown, we will transfer them to new containers with soil and eventually each child will take theirs home. We also had the opportunity to observe a young beanstalk that a student brought in from home.  We focused on new vocabulary: Tall, short, beanstalk, boy, mother, cow, magic beans, up, down, poor, castle, gold, axe, grow, clouds, goose, harp, egg, dirt.

I´m always surprised by our kindergarten class´s fascination with reading.  Up until this point I had not brought in any reading activities as not to confuse their intensive discovery and learning of the written word in Portuguese; however, throughout the first semester they constantly attempted to read words from books I read to them.  Yesterday I brought in the poem: The Giant´s Chant and corresponding matching word phrases.  I was amazed to see how easily they matched the phrases to the original text. Many students were actually able to follow along with their finger as we read the poem together.  

João e o Pé de Feijão  

Tivemos uma otima semana com nosso novo projeto: Os Quatro Elementos: Terra. Primeiro lemos a história clássica de João e o Pé de Feijão. Conversamos sobre o que as plantas precisam para crescer: sol, água, terra. Os alunos curtiram uma atividade de colorir e colar João subindo o pé de feijão. Depois, assistimos um vídeo e e depois recantamos a história usando figuras coloridas das personagens e cenas. Finalmente plantamos feijão preto em copos transparentes, utilizando algodão de modo que podemos observar o seu crescimento, enquanto continuamos a cuidar deles durante as próximas semanas. Uma vez que as raízes cresceram, vamos transferi-los para novos recipientes com terra e, eventualmente, cada criança levará para casa. Também tivemos a oportunidade de observar um pé de feijão maior que uma aluna trouxe de casa. Focamos no vocabulário: alto, baixo, pé de feijão, menino, mãe, vaca, feijões mágicos, pobre, castelo, ouro, machado, crescer, nuvens, ganso, harpa, ovo, terra

Estou sempre surpresa com o fascínio da nossa turma de Pré II com a leitura. Até este momento não tinha trazido atividades de leitura em inglês, para não confundir seu processo intensivo de descobertas em letramento em Português, no entanto, os alunos estão constantemente tentando “ler” palavras de textos de livros que conto para eles. Óntem trouxe o poema: The Giant´s Chant e as frases correspondentes. Fiquei chocada ao ver a facilidade com que conseguiram corresponder as frases com o texto original e muitos deles também conseguiram acompanhar com o dedo em quanto lemos o texto juntos.
